Physiotherapy
An individual approach to recovery, movement and performance, with the rigour and experience of elite sport.
Tiago Pereira
Tiago's approach was built between physiotherapy and elite sport. Working with athletes taught him the importance of assessing, recovering and preparing the body not just to return to movement, but to meet each person's demands.
Tiago Pereira is a physiotherapist with a degree from Escola Superior de Saúde Atlântica and complementary training in Osteopathy from the Escuela de Osteopatía de Madrid.
He built his career in elite sport, working with the Physiotherapy department of Sporting Clube de Portugal (roller hockey) and joining the Physiotherapy teams of Sport Lisboa e Benfica in the Youth Football, International Football and Other Sports departments - following teams in international competitions in Europe, Brazil and China. He is also a coach and physiotherapist at APSC Gimnoanima - Associação Desportiva de Sintra, where he continues to work with gymnastics athletes.
That experience shapes how he works today: an individual approach based on assessment, movement and progression, adapted both to those recovering from an injury and to those who want to return to physical activity or improve their capacity.
At Health Lab, he follows each person through the recovery process, aiming to restore confidence in movement and create the conditions for a progressive return to the activities that are part of their life.
Continuous training guides a practice focused on the person and their goals, with specialisations in functional training, neuromuscular taping, cupping, running biomechanics and applied kinesiology.

What you need to know.
How long does a physiotherapy appointment last?
The first appointment lasts about 75 minutes and includes time to get to know your history, assess the situation and start the intervention. Follow-up appointments last about 60 minutes and are adjusted to your progress and the plan defined.
Do I need a medical referral to book physiotherapy?
You can book a physiotherapy appointment directly. In certain situations, namely for insurance or refund purposes, a medical prescription may be required. We recommend checking the conditions of your policy beforehand.
Can I use my health insurance?
It depends on your policy and its cover and refund conditions. We recommend checking directly with your insurer before the appointment.
What documents do I need to claim a refund?
We issue an invoice-receipt with your tax number (NIF) and the required professional details. Any additional documentation depends on the insurer and the policy.
Can I deduct physiotherapy on my Portuguese tax return (IRS)?
Yes. It is a health expense: you deduct 15% of the amount, within the limit of €1,000 per household for health expenses. For that, the invoice must have your NIF and you should confirm in e-Fatura, early the following year, that it was recorded as a health expense. The part refunded by insurance does not count towards the deduction.
What should I wear?
We recommend comfortable clothing that makes it easy to assess and move the area to be worked on. Depending on the appointment, shorts or training clothes may be useful.
Should I bring exams or reports?
Yes, if you have them. X-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, medical reports or other exams related to the reason for the appointment can be useful to complement the assessment.
Is physiotherapy only for recovering from injuries?
No. Physiotherapy can be part of recovery after an injury or surgery, but it can also be relevant for pain, changes in movement or function, and in a progressive return to physical activity and sport.
Will I exercise during the appointment?
It depends on the assessment and the stage of recovery. Exercise can be part of the intervention and is selected and progressively adjusted to each person's needs and goals.
Do I need to play sport to benefit from this approach?
No. Experience in elite sport adds knowledge about movement, load and recovery, but the approach is adapted to each person - whether the goal is to compete again, work without limitations or simply move better in daily life.
How many appointments will I need?
There is no single number for everyone. It depends on the situation, the goals and the progress along the way. After the initial assessment, we explain the plan and the next steps.
Recovering is getting back to doing.
Physiotherapy seeks to recover movement, function and capacity after an injury, pain, surgery or a period of limitation.
At Health Lab, every process starts with an individual assessment. We try to understand not only what hurts, but what is limiting you, what your daily life demands and where you want to get back to.
Treatment can combine different intervention and exercise strategies, adapted to the stage of recovery and revised as you progress.
Understand the problem, the context and what is limiting movement or function.
Work on the relevant factors to reduce limitations and progressively recover capacity.
Reintroduce movement, load and exercise, adapted to each person's progress.
Prepare the body to return to the demands of daily life, work or sport with greater confidence.
Caring for health means thinking long term.
Recovery does not end when the pain goes away. Movement, sleep, stress management, nutrition and relationships shape how we recover, adapt and care for our health over a lifetime.
These are the pillars that guide Health Lab's approach - inside and outside the consulting room.
